HIBBING — The Hibbing Miners brought their hitting shoes to their game on Wednesday at Nyberg Field as they knocked out 12 hits and made use of five Lake Superior errors as Hibbing defeated the Sea Dogs 14-1 in seven innings.
Hibbing sent 12 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the second inning to take a big lead. Joe Kanipes cleared the bases with a bases loaded double in the inning while Andy Kolden had a two-run double. Kole Zuidmulder and Zack DeBoom each had RBI singles in the inning.
Hibbing increased its lead to 10-0 with a run in the third inning when DeBoom doubled and scored on a RBI single by Ricardo Paris.
The Miners upped the lead to 13-0 with three runs in the fifth inning when Zuidmulder doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three runs. Hibbing added its final run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by DeBoom.
Lake Superior scored its lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single by Michael Karp.
The veteran Jamie Steinberg hurled the distance on the mound for Hibbing to pick up the win, allowing just one run on seven hits while not issuing a walk and striking out six.
Seth Anderson pitched the first two innings for Lake Superior and took the loss. Karp and Chanler Dilday also saw mound action for the Sea Dogs.
Dylan Mattson had a hit and scored two runs for Hibbing while Zuidmulder had two hits with a double, scored a run and drove in four. Trevor Bernsdorf and Joe Lescarbeau each had a hit and scored a pair of runs while Kanipes had two hits with a double, scored two runs and drove in three. Kolden had a hit, scored a run and drove in two and DeBoom finished with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Jacob Becks had two of the seven hits for Lake Superior.
