The Grand Rapids 12U fastpitch softball team – a member of the Thunder Fastpitch program in Grand Rapids – put things together this past weekend to capture the championship of the USSSA 12U Open Class Northern State Tournament which was conducted at Cloquet.
After starting off the prestigious Gopher Classic with two straight losses, the Grand Rapids Post No. 60 American Legion baseball team won its final three games of the tournament against tough competition to come away with smiles from the tournament.

Drew Forer of Hibbing competed in the Knights of Columbus State Free Throw competition and took home the championship. Forer made and two other competitors all made 22-of-25 free throws, then in the tiebreaker, Forer shot 5-for-5 to become the state champ for 13-year-old boys.
