BIWABIK — Excellent snowmaking conditions in the last two weeks have Giants Ridge ready to open on Friday.
Not only will it be open, but 40 percent of the ski resort’s extensive terrain is expected to be open for skiers and boarders.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer a significant amount of the Giants Ridge mountain to our guests right from the start of the season. This is the best opener we’ve had at Giants Ridge since the 1990s,” said Benji Neff, director of Mountain Sports at Giants Ridge.
The early, extensive opening comes on the heels of a record winter sports season in 2017-18. Giants Ridge is now headed into the new season with much optimism.
Fred Seymour, General Manager at Giants Ridge, conveyed the anticipated excitement as the season opener approaches, this Friday.
“We’re riding the wave of an outstanding winter sports season,” said Seymour. “Our team put together an exceptional product for our guests last season and we anticipate more of the same quality product again this season.”
Giants Ridge is set to kick off the 2018-19 season with the “best season opener in decades,” considering that 40 percent is expected to be open for skiers and boarders.
Once at the resort, skiers and snowboarders will be able to enjoy some of the best-groomed snow around.
“We heard so much positive feedback from our guests last season in regard to the immaculate grooming at the Ridge and our team is expecting to provide the same ideal snow conditions again this year,’’ Neff added.
Jaimie Niska, Giants Ridge director of sales and marketing, added that many guests last season said they hadn’t seen the resort in this great of a condition in years. We’re just really happy we’re able to provide continued quality product for our guests when it comes to grooming.’’
The addition of two new, state-of-the-art chairlifts last year also proved to be a game-changer for guests, offering an added level of convenience for skiers and boarders – affording more time spent skiing and less time riding lifts.
“The new chairlifts have been ideal for our skiing guests here at Giants Ridge,’’ Niska said. “The high speed chairlift on Sarajevo has been able to get skiers to the top of the hill faster so that gives them more time to actually ski,’’ which equals “more skiing for their money.’’
“The upcoming winter season brings even more ways for our Giants Ridge community to unplug and reconnect with family
and friends,” added Niska. “This season we’ve added yet another
night of night skiing to our calendar — Thursday nights. Starting Dec. 21, Giants Ridge will offer night skiing ($25 includes lift and rental) from 4-8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and from 2-6 p.m. on Sundays through March 31.
According to Niska, there are more special promotions planned for the season, including a new “Skiing with Santa” promo, in which $25 lift tickets are offered for everyone on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and are available for purchase on the resort’s website or in person.
Giants Ridge is home to 35 downhill ski runs, over 60 kilometers of Nordic trails, snow tubing, snowshoeing, disc golf, two
award-winning championship 18-hole golf courses, an expanding mountain biking trail system, as well as access to the 132 mile-long multi-use Mesabi Trail and adjacent snowmobile trails.
