DULUTH -— The Ely baseball team kept their season alive Tuesday afternoon with a decisive 4-0 win over Cook County at Duluth’s Wade Stadium.
The Timberwolves were scheduled to play again Tuesday against the loser of Carlton and South Ridge, but that game was postponed in the bottom of the third due to lightning in the area. Those two teams will pick up play again at 4 p.m. today with Ely taking on the loser of that matchup at 6 p.m.
The Timberwolves got a stellar outing on the pitcher’s mound from junior Dalton Schreffler. Schreffler pitched a complete game, giving up no runs on five hits and three walks. He fanned four along the way.
Ely got on the board early with Trevor Mattson bringing two home in the top of the fourth with a two RBI single, giving the Timberwolves a lead they’d never let go of.
Tyler Housey was also hot at the plate going 3-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Will Davies finished the contest also with a pair of hits.
Ely head coach Frank Ivancich was pleased all around with his team’s performance on Tuesday.
“I’m definitely happy with what we did today,” Ivancich said. “Dalton threw really well for us today and he helped keep them off the scoreboard. We had to play through two really tough good teams last Thursday against Cherry and Nashwauk-Keewatin. I think Cook County maybe had a little bit of an easier road to get to this game so I told our guys that we’re tested and prepared for another elimination game.”
Another thing that prepared Ely for a slew of elimination games was their regular season schedule, one that Ivancich said they beefed up this year.
“We played some tougher teams this year and that benefits us right now in the tournament. We can make a hiccup or have a miscue here but still be able to absorb it and bounce back. Everything feels like it’s kind of in place here. Our motto is to win every inning and hopefully we continue to play well across the board.”
A battle-tested Ely squad hopes they can keep their run going today and make their first appearance in the section title game since 2017.
“We’re feeling pretty good right now. We just need to show up and play. I told the guys that we’ve been here before so this is nothing new for most of these guys.”
Ely’s game against the loser of Carlton and South Ridge is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Wade Stadium. The section championship is set to be played on Thursday, as scheduled and also at Wade Stadium.
