GRAND RAPIDS — While the Hibbing High School boys swimming and diving team placed a close second to Grand Rapids in the Section 6A True Team Meet Saturday, it did retain the championship of the Iron Range Conference Meet.
And, the Bluejackets received an added bonus when they became just the third Northern team in the 20-year history of the True Team meet to be named to the state True Team meet as a wild card team. A wild card team is selected based electronically on the team’s performance at the region meet.
“We were the last wild card team added,” said an elated Hibbing coach Mike Veneziano. “The only bitter pill tonight by winning the IRC and finishing second in the True Team is we wouldn’t get a chance to advance to the state tournament. So this just validates everything that has gone on today and is a just reward for the hard work of my athletes.
“I am proud of them and I am excited to be representing our region as a wild card team. There have only been two Northern teams in the history of True Team to have ever made a wild card berth in 20 years.”
The state True Team meet will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 26, starting at 1 p.m. at the University of Minnesota swimming pool.
In Saturday’s region True Team meet, Grand Rapids finished with 1,568.5 points to tip Hibbing, which finished with 1,510. Chisago Lakes was third with 1,142 points. Chisholm placed sixth with 810 points.
The meet also served as the Iron Range Conference Meet. In that meet, it is scored as a traditional invite with just the seven IRC teams involved. Hibbing won with 503 points with Grand Rapids a distant second with 427. Chisholm was third with 318 followed by Virginia in fourth with 309.
“Grand Rapids won the True Team because of its depth, but when you shift the scoring to a traditional format, we retained the IRC championship because we beat Rapids by 70 something points with traditional scoring,” Veneziano said. “Everything that I told our guys we needed to do to have a shot at winning the True Team, we came through today. They performed so outstanding and it was a valiant effort. I am extremely proud of how they conducted themselves.
“I would say our personal bests today were well over 80 percent for the team. We really dominated the medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay while our 400 dropped a substantial amount of time. I believe we won half the events and we were real close with a lot of second places.
“Hats off to Grand Rapids as they got us today. They got us on depth; our depth guys performed outstanding but they just have more of it than we do. But in the traditional format, that depth is nullified.”
