ELY — The Mesabi Range softball team picked up their first pair of wins Friday with a doubleheader sweep of hosting Vermilion.
In game one, the Lady Norse defeated the Ironwomen 15-2 before downing them again in game two, 12-1.
Morgan Schlotec and Hailey Aho were both 1-3 with a run scored and three RBIs and Kaitlin Knutson collected a hit and had two RBIs. Holly Krentz and Megan Aho collected the last two hits with Krentz getting the RBI. Hailey Willard and Callie Sellman each had an RBI with Willard scoring a run herself.
Knutson was the winning pitcher for the Lady Norse going all five innings giving up two runs on six hits and two walks. She fanned eight along the way.
The Ironwomen were led by Meghan Ferrell who was 2-3 with an RBI.
In game two, Mesabi Range continued their dominance with a 12-1 win with Knutson again getting the win in the circle. Again they scored in all five innings of play.
Knutson threw a one-hitter and gave up one run in the contest and two walks. She struck out three along the way.
At the plate Hailey Aho and Katie Hunter each went 2-3 with Aho adding three RBIs and two runs scored and Hunter adding a run scored.
Rainy River 9-11,
Mesabi Range 2-5
At Superior, the Mesabi Range baseball team were able to get some runs on the board, but were outgunned by Rainy River Friday as they fell in both games of a doubleheader, 9-2 and 11-5.
In game one, Tom Norman took the loss on the mound for the Norsemen after giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks.
At the plate, Max Carlson was 2-3 with an RBI to lead Mesabi Range. Brad MacDougall went 1-3 with an RBI. Matthew Salters and Isaiah Umbreit each collected a hit and a run scored and Jared Opsahl and Blake Warner grabbed the last two hits for Mesabi.
In game two, Opsahl was the losing pitcher for the Norse giving up nine runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks.
MacDougall led at the plate going 2-3 with two RBIs.
