ST. CLOUD — The Hibbing Community College baseball team lost its opening game of the Region XIII Baseball Tournament by an 8-2 score to Minnesota State-Fergus Falls Wednesday in action at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.
Fergus Falls jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning off of Hibbing starting pitcher Joey Fracek. Fergus Falls scored another run in the top of the second inning to lead 4-0, but the Cardinals were able to score one in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 4-1.
But Fergus Falls was able to add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to increase its lead to 6-1, and it added two more in the ninth inning for an 8-1 lead.
Hibbing was able to score one in the bottom of the ninth but it was not nearly enough as Fergus Falls took the victory.
Levi Arnold was tough on the mound for Fergus Falls in hurling a complete game. In his nine innings of work he allowed two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five.
Fracek took the loss for HCC as he pitched the first four innings and gave up five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
Brody Mundell pitched the final four innings for Hibbing and allowed three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.
Ryan Schmitz had a big day at the plate for Fergus Falls as he cracked two home runs and drove in five runs. Tom Magnusson had two hits and a run scored and Cody Arlt had two hits with a run scored and a RBI. Matt Pietsch had three hits and scored three runs.
Jordan Perez had two hits and two RBIs for Hibbing while Sammy Rivera, Evan Jerome, Ray Santacruz, Evyn Booth, Jaiman Lamphere and Kennie Rivera all had one hit.
