GRAND RAPIDS — The Hibbing Community College women’s basketball team will now host the Region XIII Tournament.
The coin flip between the Cardinals and Northland was held Thursday during a conference call, and with the call of tails, Hibbing was fortunate enough to win the flip.
The site of the game was still up in the air because the Cardinals still had some work to by beating Itasca.
Hibbing had to put that coin toss in the rearview mirror, and travel to Grand Rapids where the Cardinals put an exclamation point on the season with a xx-xx MCAC Northern Division victory over the Vikings.
“This is a wonderful place to be,” Hibbing coach Kate Brau said. “It’s a bit of a relief to finish this week because of this win. We are now conference co-champions, and we earned the No. 1 seed overall.
“We will host next Saturday and Sunday.”
Brau was proud of the way her team responded after knowing the results of the coin flip.
“We put it to our team that regardless of what happened, we had the opportunity to win the conference,” Brau said. “We knew of our potential to host the tourney. It was great to see our team go out and get it.”
Hibbing left little doubt about the outcome of the game as it took a 29-9 lead in the first quarter.
“Traditionally, we have great first quarters,” Brau said. “To have this one, it was refreshing to see the team come out with that kind of intensity and lack of fear.”
The Cardinals led 48-21 at the half, but that didn’t stop Brau from offering a challenge up to her team.
“At halftime, we gave them an incentive as to points in the paint and points off of turnovers,” she said. “We had great numbers at the half generated through our defense, and that carried us through to the second half.
“We had 52 points in the paint and 34 off of turnovers. We forced 30 turnovers in the game.”
Hibbing was led by Alexis Desjarlait with 22 points. Bethany Baldwin had 17, Hannah Morris 14 and Klaryssa Whelan had 10.
“It’s back to work next week,” Brau said. “It was a wonderful day for our team.”
Itasca was led by Maddy Shepard with 17 points. Kenzi Reidel had 10.
