BETHLEHEM — The Hibbing Community College women’s basketball team committed 32 turnovers en route to a 62-53 loss to Western Tech at the Division III National Tournament Thursday.
Needless to say, that surprised Cardinal coach Kate Brau because her team is used to handling pressure.
“Our goal was to out-rebound this team and cause turnovers,” Brau said. “We were able to out-rebound them, but when you have 32 turnovers in a game, you won’t win, or should you win.”
The game was tied 25-25 at the half, and both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter to make it 39-39.
The game was tied with two minutes to play in the contest, but the Cavaliers made the shots to win it.
“Western Tech plays great half-court defense,” Brau said. “We adjusted better in the second half to that defense, which caused less turnovers, but they made the shots to win it.”
Hibbing was led by Alexis Desjarlait with 12 points, followed by Sherea’ Cherenfant and Shauan Kavajcez with 11 each.
Caitlin Young had 19 for Western Tech. Lexi Schmidtknecht had 10.
“Defensively, we held them to 62 points,” Brau said. “Between that and our rebounding output, we did well. We didn’t play well today. I don’t know if it was in the cards, so we have to look forward to today.”
The Cardinals play Anne Arundel at 1 p.m., EST.
