HIBBING — Being a parent can be stressful. Parents often struggle with walking the line between being a caregiver and being a disciplinarian.
Claudia Mescher plans to address these challenges when she speaks next Tuesday, Feb. 7, for the next Pediatric speaker Information Night.
Mescher’s presentation is titled “3D Management: Discipline, Disobedience, Defiance.”
The presentation is set for 6:30 p.m. in Greenhaven Elementary School Cafeteria. The event is free and open to the public.
A sister to nine siblings, a wife, mother, retired educator and principal, Mescher describes herself now as a professional volunteer.
Her presentation will focus on strategies for parents when their child is being defiant.
The content of the presentation “came about when asked to talk to parents about disciplining young children and given specific questions about what to do when children disobeyed or were defiant,” Mescher said. “The information I share will center around changing our words and actions to get what we need without yelling, bribing or bullying.”
The presentation is geared toward anyone who lives or works with children.
“This presentation is for any individual, working with children of all ages — parents, grandparents, teachers, childcare providers — who are looking for a calmer way of dealing with the power struggles encountered daily at home, at daycare or in the classroom,” Mescher explained.
Pediatric Speaker Information Night topics typically focus on families with children from birth to age eight, but any interested community members are welcome to attend. Three information nights are scheduled during the school year and speakers cover an array of topics parents encounter.
Mescher hopes attendees will walk away with a better sense of how to deal with their child’s behavior in a positive way.
“The program I present will provide a sense of relief that they are not alone. Children do not come with instructions,” she said. “What I hope for each person is to take home some new strategies, some tips and a plan of action that will strengthen their family bond or sense of community in the daycare or classroom.”
The event is sponsored by Fairview and Essentia Health and is in cooperation with St. Louis County Public Health and Hibbing Early Childhood Family Education.
Certificates of attendance will be available. You can register to attend and to reserve childcare for children 0-8 years of age at Hibbing Early Childhood by calling (218) 208-0853 Ext. 1.
