The Gurkhas are soldiers from the nation of Nepal who over the past 200 years have frequently been a part of the British Army. Gurkha regiments have often been noted for outstanding combat skills and extraordinary bravery. In 1964 the British were aiding the Malaysians in a battle against Indonesia. A platoon of Gurkhas was asked if they would be willing to jump from transport planes into combat against the Indonesians if the need arose. The Gurkhas had the right to turn down the request because they had never been trained as paratroopers. Though the Gurkhas usually agreed to every assignment, this time they rejected the plan.
A few days later, however, a Gurkha officer approached the British Commander and said his platoon was willing to jump under certain conditions. “What are they?” asked the Commander. “Since we are not experienced jumpers, we will only jump if the land is marshy or reasonably soft ground, free of rocks.” said the Gurkha officer. “That should be no problem,” replied the Commander.
“We would also like the plane to fly as slowly as possible and no more than one hundred feet high,” the Gurkha leader continued. “Well,” the British Commander said, “The plane usually flies as slow as possible when dropping troops, but jumping from a hundred feet is impossible because the parachutes will not open from that height.”
“Oh,” said the Gurkha officer, “that is all right. We will be glad to jump anywhere. You had not mentioned that we would be using parachutes.”
Friends, sometimes the Lord calls us to do things which are way beyond our comfort zone. Assignments may range from caring for a sick family member to serving as a missionary in the African jungle (with many things in between). Sometimes we have to work very hard to muster up the courage to tackle a difficult task we know we should do.
It is important to remember, however, that God never asks us to jump out of a plane without a parachute. Whenever the Lord calls us to do something, He equips us so that we are able to do that task in a way that will bring honor to Him. As Christians we have been given a variety of spiritual gifts as well as the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. When we are relying and trusting in Him, God will enable us to do what needs to be done.
Friend, do you face some difficult assignments from the Lord in the week ahead? Please remember that God will not ask you to jump out of a plane without a parachute. He will give you the grace to accomplish what He has called you to do.
Yours, grateful for the help I receive from the Lord each day,
Rev. Dan Erickson,
