HIBBING— John B. “Barney” Gillis, 82, a lifelong resident of Hibbing, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at the University Medical Center–Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Hibbing, the son of Neil and Pearl (Cheever) Gillis. On Sept. 11, 1949, he married Carolyn Pixley in Bear River. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing, the Masonic Mesaba Lodge 255 in Hibbing and the Hibbing Shriner’s. He enjoyed bowling, family get-togethers and woodcarving. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially boating and water skiing with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carolyn; children: John (Patricia) Gillis of Ham Lake, Susan (Hollis) Stavn of Greenbrae, Calif., and Terry (Karen) Gillis of Tacoma, Wash.; grandchildren: Shana (Adam) Valenta, Kristopher Gillis, Nicholas Hartman, Robert (Heather) Gillis and Erica Lynn; great-grandchildren: Joseph Valenta, Taylor Ann Gillis and Curt Lynn; siblings: Wilbur (Iris) Gillis of Hibbing, Neil (Geri) Gillis of Shakopee, Minn., Peggy (Gene) Mielke of Hibbing and Tim (fiancée Debra Boentje) Gillis of Woodbury, Minn.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Druscilla Nehiba and Mildred Johnson.

Funeral: Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Dorothy Duquette will officiate at the service.

Visitation: Will be held for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Burial: Interment will take place in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Hibbing.

Memorials: Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Shriner’s Hospital, 2025 E. River Pkwy., Minneapolis, MN 55414.
