PENGILLY — A Maple Plain, Minn., has died after his ATV sideswiped a tractor trailer Monday night on Highway 65 south of Pengilly.
Brian K. Johnson, 62, was transported to Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids following the crash and later died. The accident occurred 10:34 p.m. Monday on Highway 65 near milepost 166.
Johnson was traveling southbound on blacktop of the southbound lane on Highway 65 when his ATV sideswiped and collided with the trailer of a semi-truck being driven by Keith O. Moellering, 62, of Nashwauk.
The wide-load tractor trailer, which was traveling northbound, had warning lights, flags and signs on it, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. It was also being escorted by the state patrol at the time of the crash.
Moellering did not sustain any injuries.
The ATV was moderately damaged and towed to M & M Auto Body in Nashwauk. No damage was reported to the tractor trailer.
It’s unknown if Johnson had alcohol in his system, according to the report.
The Minnesota State Patrol is still investigating the accident. The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office and Nashwauk Police Department assisted.
