HIBBING — Video games and movies go hand in hand, according to Donovan Happy.
“They kind of go together,” he said. “They coincide well.”
Happy is one-third of the trio of owners of Gamer’s Haven, which just expanded to include a movie rental business by the name of G H Video. Mike Handy and Jake Rick also co-own the joint.
The new rental venue opened in mid-August, and comes just as two other movie rental businesses closed their doors here in Hibbing.
“We focus on offering hometown video rental,” Happy said. “We offer a wide variety, a lot of the new stuff and selection, and friendly service. We have videos and games for all ages.”
The closing of the other businesses prompted owners of G H Video to obtain their stock. Happy estimated the store currently has 4,000 videos and 3,000-plus video games on hand. Video games are available for nearly all gaming systems, he added.
New releases are available for overnight rental at $2.75 per movie. Older releases are available for three-day rental at $1.25 per movie.
There are no late fees. If you refer someone, you get a free rental.
Categories of movies include kids, family, action, comedy, drama, sci-fi, horror and western, among others. They offer an adults-only section and anime. They also have on hand several TV series and favorites from the 1980s.
“We’re more than just the basics,” Happy said.
New releases are purchased every Tuesday.
Renting out videos has been a slow go, but word is just beginning to spread that the business is up and running, Happy said. Only days into last week, they had served about 100 people, he noted.
“Traffic will pick up,” he said. “We’ll continue to grow.”
Future plans at this point are focused on growing the rental collection. Happy said they are aiming to have at least one copy of every movie out there available.
“We want to have at least one copy here for people to rent,” he said. “It will be a slow process (getting them all), but we’re determined.”
G H Video is located in the heart of Howard Street, the corner of Howard and Fourth Avenue East, to be exact. Parking is available in front, on the side and in the lot behind the building.
“Being centrally located is good,” Happy said. “It’s perfect for people so they don’t have to go across town to get it. We’re in walking distance of lots of places, including restaurants.”
Keeping businesses open and operating in the downtown area is important, he added. And they’re happy to be part of it.
“We’re willing to go out of our way for customers,” he said. “If they want a specific movie, we’ll try to get it for them. We’ll do our best to make it easy and convenient.”
G H Video is located at 401 Howard St., as is Gamer’s Haven, which is a gaming place for people to hang out, compete and swap strategies.
Hours of G H Video are currently 1 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and are subject to change. The phone number is 263-8700.
